Muay Thai Weapons

Muay Thai Weapons

Muay Thai, which is also known as Thai Boxing and the “Art of Eight Limbs” is a the art of striking that anyone can learn. Whether your goal is to increase flexibility, get fit, be more athletic, learn self defense or fight in a cage, Muay Thai is one of those sports (and arts) that can help you achieve these goals and many more.

But what exactly is the “Art of Eight Limbs?”

Well, it’s just that: the ability to use Fists, elbows, knees, and feet as weapons.

Mastery of these 8 weapons can build confidence, and help achieve victory against an opponent.

Like boxing, Muay Thai utilizes Jabs, Hooks, Uppercuts and straight rights. Unlike boxing, Muay Thai also uses the elbows to inflict cuts and knock out blows.

Vertical elbows (like an uppercut or 6-12), jumping vertical elbows attacking the head and shoulders, spinning reverse elbows and horizontal elbows are dangerous and effective weapons for self defense and Muay Thai competitions.

Like Sport Karate and Kickboxing, Muay Thai utilizes familiar kicks like roundhouse kicks, Teep/Push kicks (or front kicks), spinning kicks. Unlike sport karate and kickboxing, Muay Thai also includes powerful knee strikes inflict damage in close or as you ‘close the gap’ against an opponent.

This is the use of eight limbs – but it is not limited to striking. The Muay Thai clinch is one of the most aggressive forms of the art and within the clinch, a Muay Thai fighter can inflict a lot of damage and powerful blows to an opponent.

The art of Muay Thai not only covers strikes, but throws and grappling – which makes Muay Thai a full system of combat. Throw downs, sweeps, throws and fighting holds makes a Muay Thai practitioner a very dangerous fighter.

This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Muay Thai. There are many techniques on the road to mastery of Muay Thai!

For more information and to take a class, visit Old Town Fight Club in Monrovia or call (626) 239-1000 to schedule a free session today!

What is Muay Thai? – “Art of Eight Limbs”

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

What is Muay Thai?

“Art of Eight Limbs”

Straight from Wikipedia:

Muay Thai (Thai: มวยไทย, RTGS: Muai Thai, IPA: [mūɛj tʰāj]) is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It is similar to other Indochinese styles, namely pradal serey from Cambodia, tomoi from Malaysia, lethwei from Myanmar and Muay Lao from Laos. Descended from muay boran, Muay Thai is Thailand’s national sport.[1][2][3][4]

The word muay derives from the Sanskrit mavya. Muay Thai is referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs” or the “Science Of Eight Limbs” because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight “points of contact”, as opposed to “two points” (fists) in boxing and “four points” (hands and feet) used in other more regulated martial arts sports, such as kickboxing, boxing, and savate.[5] A practitioner of Muay Thai is known as a nak muay. Western practitioners are sometimes called nak muay farang, meaning “foreign boxer.”[6]

Glenn’s Super 7 Boxing Core Workout Circuit

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Glenn’s Super 7 Boxing Core Workout Circuit

The ability to deliver a powerful punch comes conversely with being able to take a powerful punch. Boxers, Full Contact Karate, and/or Mixed Martial Artists take punches to the abdomen which, within a fight and throughout a fighter’s career, will result in wear and tear with potential damage to the liver and kidneys.  Developing one’s core should be a primary goal in order to improve punching power as well as taking the punch itself.

The stronger a fighter’s core, the less likely they will be ‘down for the count’ when punched.  A fighter’s core is the difference between going the distance or being dropped to the floor with a good body shot.

Glenn’s Super 7 Boxing Core Workout Circuit will focus on core muscles to improve punching power and strength as well as build the proper protection to your liver, kidneys and vital organs. Fit this core workout circuit to your training for a stronger core, better looking abs, and power to your punch!

1. PLANK
In a face down position, balance on the tips of your toes with your elbows directly under your shoulders. Raise your body off the ground and hold a flat position.  Maintain a straight line from heels to head (neutral back).  REPS: Hold for 30 seconds.

2. SIDE PLANK
Start on your side and press up with your right arm/elbow. Form a bridge maintaining a straight line from your hand to your foot with opposite hand on your hip. Concentrate on ‘hips forward’ in order to keep your back straight (neutral back). REPS:  Hold for 30 seconds each side

3. HIP EXTENSIONS
Start on your back with your knees bent and feet flat. Raise your hips up by pushing through your heels and squeezing your butt. Hold at the top then lower under control. REPS: 15 (with 2-0-2 pace)
Example: Down 1-2, Up 1-2, Down 1-2, Up 1-2

4. RUSSIAN TWISTS
a)  Start by sitting on the floor with hips and knees flexed to approximately 90 degree angles (similar to a sit-up position).  Feet flat on the floor.
b) Grasp a medicine ball or small dumbbell and swing it to the right and left as you keep the hips from rotating with the shoulders. (Key: Don’t turn hips)
c) The arms are not perpendicular to the torso, but instead, kept low, near the thighs, as the medicine ball is swung to each side. REPS: 15 with a 1-2-1 count
Example: Right-Left-1- L-2-L-3-4-5…15

5. FLUTTER KICKS WITH WEIGHTS ON STOMACH
Lie flat on your back. Hold a dumbbell or plate on your belly (right on your belly button).  Raise head in neutral position while keeping your lower back pressed to the floor. Lift legs about 6 inches from the ground and alternate flutter kicks raising legs about 12 inches.  REPS: 10 with a 1-2-3-1 count.

Example: Right-Left-Right-One, R-L-R-Two, 1-2-3-Three, 1-2-3-Four, 1-2-3-Five,…  1-2-3-Ten

6. SPLIT SQUATS WITH DUMBELL TWISTS
a) Start with legs shoulder width apart holding dumbbell with both hands in front of body.
b) Lunge about 3 feet forward with RIGHT foot forming a 90 degree bend at front hip and knee without allowing knee to pass your big toe.
c) Begin squat: as you squat swing dumbbell across body toward RIGHT hip and back up with dumbbell back in front of body.
d) Begin squat: and swing dumbbell across body toward LEFT hip and back up.
REPS: 12 squats on each leg with a 2-0-2 pace

7. ONE ARM STABILITY BALL DUMBBELL PRESS
Using a stability ball and one Dumbbell, keep your shoulders back on the ball with your hips raised nice and high to maintain a flat back. Don’t let your body move as you press.  REPS: 12 on each arm

Then comes the boxers and KoKoDo JuJutsu classes.  You may see the Boxers doing ‘road work conditioning’ on Tuesday and Thursday nights – and you’ll see some wrist locks, judo throws, and self defense techniques by the KoKoDo JuJutsu students.

As the night winds down someone grabs a mop and others help out to clean the mats. This is ‘their gym’ – the members make it what it is and they also clean up after themselves for the next day.

Listen to what they laugh and talk about as the gym slowly winds itself down from a night of blood, sweat, and occasional tears.

Had enough? Well, don’t go to bed too late because on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 5:30AM you can join the Fight Shape Boot Camp class for a great start to your work day!
