The Benefits of joining OTFC

#1. Fitness and Health
Ultimately – its all about fitness and health. From getting fit for the summer, to getting ready for a fight, fitness and health should be everybody’s ultimate goal when joining a gym. At OTFC we like to say: Stay Motivated – Keep Training – Fight for Life!

#2 Learn a new skill
Get fit while learning a new skill! If you are new to Mixed Martial Arts, train with other Members just like you! And while you get in shape, in “Fight Shape” as we say, you’ll learn a valued skill along the way. Kick, punch, elbow, knee, sprawl and grapple. MMA means activating all your major muscles groups as you improve upon all your prime movements! You’re not just running, or swimming, or lifting weights – a Mixed Martial Artist (and those getting fit the MMA way) must utilize the 7 major primal movement patterns for full body strength! Push, Pull, Lunge, Bend, Twist, Squat, Walk.

As a MMA Athlete you need to push opponents away or off you. You need to pull opponents into your guard or into a clinch. You need to lunge to close the fighting gap. There’s a ton of bending and twisting as you fight your way out of awkward or into position. Squat to avoid punches or to lift an opponent before you throw them. And of course, if you can’t walk, you can’t run!

#3 Get confident with your bad self!
Kick that bag! Punch those mitts! Brace that core! Pump those weights!
You don’t get that at a gym that may be open 24 hours a day. And once you do, the confidence, the self-esteem, the pride – it all comes with putting it all out there and kicking some ass!
NO NO NO – you don’t have to fight to be a top fighting fit MMA Athlete! You just have to want to get fit and stay healthy in a unique and fun way that does not limit yourself to riding a bike for an hour or running on a treadmill for to build a healthy heart.

Your confidence will sky rocket!

We can go on and on… but here’s just a few more benefits that being an OTFC member can provide:

Competition: if you want to compete, we will get you in shape to compete!

Personal Training: Want someone to guide you through a circuit or develop a personalized Workout schedule just for you – just ask!

Meet new people? You can’t walk in or out of the gym without meeting someone new!

See you at the gym!

Stay Motivated – Keep Training – Fight for Life!

Do you want to improve your fitness while improving your footwork and quickness? Then commit to becoming faster and practice the concepts outlined by Coach Maroko in his "The Truth About Quickness" program!

You get all your power from the ground…

…supported by the strength of your core, and finally into your punch! When looking for power, look at your feet!

Likewise, when looking to evade, counter, intercept and close the gap or ‘stay in the box’ without getting hit, it all comes from the ground up! Quick feet will increase mobility and with that, the ability to evade and counter with a powerful punch.

So how do we develop that mobility, and power?

It’s a very simple formula really: WORK ON YOUR FOOTWORK!

As a fighter, mixed martial artist, karateka, and of course, eskrimador, footwork could be the key to a win, loss, a hard powerful hit, or a knock down and knockout blow with your hand or your stick! So if you are interested in the type of explosive speed a Division I College coach is looking for in an NCAA Point Guard for your Mixed Martial Arts skills, then you need to look for proper footwork drills to make your two slow feet better, and explosively faster!

Here’s where footwork drills will come into play and should become a major part of your mixed martial arts training regiment!

I’m all about footwork! One article I wrote showed a percentage of how amateur boxers lacked in power, all because of footwork. Wheras the professional boxers improved footwork and thus, created more power with a punch! Read the article here: (How to increase punching power)

Check out this video which shows incredible footwork – all coming from unique footwork drills:

Yeah, I know, this is basketball and ball handling skills. But check out that footwork and imagine how THAT can help YOU in a fight!!!

Bang-Bang-Bang

Then you’re gone and before you’re opponent knows it…

BANG-BANG-FINISH!

It’s all about the feet!

Best selling Coach/Author, Certified Personal Trainer, and personal quickness trainer, Alex Maroko, has transformed athletes in more than 51 countries worldwide into lightning quick scholarship level players using his new and unique training methods.

And that’s Alex Maroko above in that video!

Pretty incredible footwork don’t you think! Coach Maroko moves like the Manny Pacquiao of basketball!

If you are a Mixed Martial Artist or even a Stick Fighter, you will feel the ability to avoid punches and strikes much easier. Why? Because you will develop quickness in foot movement: stepping forward/back, side-to-side and pivoting.

If you do any type of resistance training you will have extra power activated by your Central Nervous System!

If you are 40ish years old like me, it’ll improve your mobility to the point you feel like a 25 year old again!

As a Martial Artist – why wouldn’t you want these things?

Let’s cut to the chase – footwork exercises and specific drills catered to faster feet is key when you train. And Alex Maroko’s training techniques found here, “The Truth About Quickness“.

Do you want to improve your fitness while improving your footwork and quickness? Do you already workout 3 times a week, and can dedicate just 27 minutes a week to quickness exercises, drills and concepts? Then commit to becoming faster and practice the concepts outlined by Coach Maroko in his “The Truth About Quickness“ program!

Also known around the world as Thai boxing, Muay Thai is an ancient art of self defense that was created and tested in battle by the fearless warriors of ancient Thailand. Today, Muay Thai is used all around the world. The United States Navy SEALs, Thai military, and even the CIA takes full advantage of the devastating and bone crushing techniques this martial art offers.

Unlike other martial arts, students of Thai dont earn belts for their skills and their progression. Instead, their skills are tested in the ring. Since Thai fighting first began, the only things that the fighters themselves are interested in are the championship belts which showcase their dominance in Muay Thai fighting.

The skills that are taught with Muay Thai are far more dominant to other striking based martial arts. Muay Thai uses very little grappling, but focuses more on crushing kicks, punches, and bone shattering elbows. Students of Thai fighting can often take an opponent down with just one shot, often times breaking bones and sometimes even killing them with just one lethal kick or elbow.

The reason why Muay Thai didnt utilize ground grappling or submission holds is because it was developed in ancient battlegrounds where there were always multiple attackers. These attackers were knowledgeable in sword fighting skills, which made the need for a dependable martial art more or less a necessity.

Muay Thai used swords, spears, sticks, and hard strikes. In this type of environment, you didnt want the fight to go to the ground. The strikes and weapon movements needed be fast, hard, and very precise. With these types of conditions and the type of environment, Muay Thai needed be a very fast responsive martial art with an excellent weapons system.

Even though grappling and submissions were planned for Muay Thai, the martial art became more of a ring sport before grappling could be implemented. With Thai originally being a martial art for striking purposes, a lot of martial artists have started using the techniques that have been proven time and time again with time boxing.

Although there are other martial arts that put a lot of emphasis on striking, Muay Thai is quite different. The first area in which Muay Thai differs is the effective use of both elbows and knees. The elbows and knees that are used with most Thai techniques are feared all around the world by boxers and other stylists.

Kicking and kneeing is the main objects in Muay Thai. In order to become efficient with kicking, the shins need to be conditioned – which can be quite painful. Once the Thai stylist has conditioned the nerves in his shins for impact, the shins can be used just like a club or a baseball bat. This is something you should really see for yourself in action – as the sound of the impact alone can send chills down your back.

Through years of training and conditioning, Muay Thai fighters can become lethal and deadly weapons. A properly trained fighter can make deadly impact, meaning that his knees, shins, and elbows are quite possibly deadlier than a gun or other type of weapon. For this very reason – Muay Thai is one of the deadliest and most feared martial arts in the world.

All in all, Muay Thai is a great martial art for defense and competition. Thai is one of the best martial arts in the world, proving it time and time again – in both ancient times and anytime it is used today.

Muay Thai Weapons

Muay Thai, which is also known as Thai Boxing and the “Art of Eight Limbs” is a the art of striking that anyone can learn. Whether your goal is to increase flexibility, get fit, be more athletic, learn self defense or fight in a cage, Muay Thai is one of those sports (and arts) that can help you achieve these goals and many more.

But what exactly is the “Art of Eight Limbs?”

Well, it’s just that: the ability to use Fists, elbows, knees, and feet as weapons.

Mastery of these 8 weapons can build confidence, and help achieve victory against an opponent.

Like boxing, Muay Thai utilizes Jabs, Hooks, Uppercuts and straight rights. Unlike boxing, Muay Thai also uses the elbows to inflict cuts and knock out blows.

Vertical elbows (like an uppercut or 6-12), jumping vertical elbows attacking the head and shoulders, spinning reverse elbows and horizontal elbows are dangerous and effective weapons for self defense and Muay Thai competitions.

Like Sport Karate and Kickboxing, Muay Thai utilizes familiar kicks like roundhouse kicks, Teep/Push kicks (or front kicks), spinning kicks. Unlike sport karate and kickboxing, Muay Thai also includes powerful knee strikes inflict damage in close or as you ‘close the gap’ against an opponent.

This is the use of eight limbs – but it is not limited to striking. The Muay Thai clinch is one of the most aggressive forms of the art and within the clinch, a Muay Thai fighter can inflict a lot of damage and powerful blows to an opponent.

The art of Muay Thai not only covers strikes, but throws and grappling – which makes Muay Thai a full system of combat. Throw downs, sweeps, throws and fighting holds makes a Muay Thai practitioner a very dangerous fighter.

This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Muay Thai. There are many techniques on the road to mastery of Muay Thai!

For more information and to take a class, visit Old Town Fight Club in Monrovia or call (626) 239-1000 to schedule a free session today!
