The Benefits of joining OTFC

#1. Fitness and Health
Ultimately – its all about fitness and health. From getting fit for the summer, to getting ready for a fight, fitness and health should be everybody’s ultimate goal when joining a gym. At OTFC we like to say: Stay Motivated – Keep Training – Fight for Life!

#2 Learn a new skill
Get fit while learning a new skill! If you are new to Mixed Martial Arts, train with other Members just like you! And while you get in shape, in “Fight Shape” as we say, you’ll learn a valued skill along the way. Kick, punch, elbow, knee, sprawl and grapple. MMA means activating all your major muscles groups as you improve upon all your prime movements! You’re not just running, or swimming, or lifting weights – a Mixed Martial Artist (and those getting fit the MMA way) must utilize the 7 major primal movement patterns for full body strength! Push, Pull, Lunge, Bend, Twist, Squat, Walk.

As a MMA Athlete you need to push opponents away or off you. You need to pull opponents into your guard or into a clinch. You need to lunge to close the fighting gap. There’s a ton of bending and twisting as you fight your way out of awkward or into position. Squat to avoid punches or to lift an opponent before you throw them. And of course, if you can’t walk, you can’t run!

#3 Get confident with your bad self!
Kick that bag! Punch those mitts! Brace that core! Pump those weights!
You don’t get that at a gym that may be open 24 hours a day. And once you do, the confidence, the self-esteem, the pride – it all comes with putting it all out there and kicking some ass!
NO NO NO – you don’t have to fight to be a top fighting fit MMA Athlete! You just have to want to get fit and stay healthy in a unique and fun way that does not limit yourself to riding a bike for an hour or running on a treadmill for to build a healthy heart.

Your confidence will sky rocket!

We can go on and on… but here’s just a few more benefits that being an OTFC member can provide:

Competition: if you want to compete, we will get you in shape to compete!

Personal Training: Want someone to guide you through a circuit or develop a personalized Workout schedule just for you – just ask!

Meet new people? You can’t walk in or out of the gym without meeting someone new!

See you at the gym!

Stay Motivated – Keep Training – Fight for Life!

It takes a lot of courage for a young child to speak about being bullied, so if they actually admit to being bullied, this could be their ‘final cry’ for help. So often, a child will keep it to themselves, and will not have the courage to tell his or her parent, teacher, or sibling about the issue due to embarrassment and/or possibly fear of retaliation from the bully.

To recognize what bullying is, www.stopbullying.gov provides valued steps or flags to indicate the signs of bullying. See: (Stop Bulling)

Is your child being bullied?

Here are important steps to take if your child is being bullied. Never ignore these tips and be as proactive versus reactive with a, “let’s wait to see what happens today” attitude.

Here are important steps to take if your child is being bullied. Never ignore these tips and be as proactive versus reactive with a, “let’s wait to see what happens today” attitude.

1. Focus on your child.
2. Contact your child’s teacher or principal.
3. Help your child become more resilient to bullying.

There are many ways to encourage your child to share how they feel when they are being bullied. The most important thing is that you are aware that they are being bullied and now, as a parent or guardian, absolutely need to react instead of ignore.

Do you want some great MMA Fitness Tips? Click Here

1. Focus on your child.

Speaking to your child about bullying may be an incredibly difficult task. Sometimes its better to listen than to ask questions. But listen attentively, and let your child speak about their emotions.

Here are some tips on speaking to an angry child: “How to calm an angry child”. This article stresses the important aspect of listening and acknowledging your child’s emotions.

Other important tips when focusing on your child:

-Don’t tell your child to ignore the bullyling! This impresses upon them that you are going to ignore it. This will lead to other things in life the child may need to focus on but eventually will ignore – as per your instruction.
-Don’t blame your child. Statements like: “Well, what were you doing for him or her to bully you?” This is not about what your child did, it is how he or she feels. Validate those feelings versus making it ‘their fault’.
-Listen: Focus on what your child has to say. Hold off on the advice, just let all the information come in and stay calm.
-Empathize with your child: Feel, Felt, Found”

“I know exactly how you feel.” [Restate what they felt and how you have felt the same thing]
“I’ve felt the same way.” [Reveal a similar experience that happened to you]
“This is what I found.” [Share how you handled the situation and why it is good your child came to you]

-Do not criticize how your child has handled the situation thus far.
-Refrain from physical retaliation. This could excel the problem.
-Stay calm before you speak.

2. Contact your child’s teacher or principal.

The help of other adults closer to the situation will help the situation. Most times, parents feel that other teachers or principals may not get involved unless they witness the bullying actions. If a teacher decides to ‘ignore’ the situation, this teacher is not a responsible educator.

State the facts and don’t demand things: Buy stating your feelings, and the feelings of your child, actions need to be taken versus ignored. Do not demand things or give ultimatums with an: “if nothing is done I’m going to do this-that or the other thing” attitude.

Involve yourself – off to work with the teacher, principal, and other parents to stop the bullying.

Expect the bullying to stop. You’ve stated your concerns, now expect things to work. Stay in contact with school staff and your child: the ‘don’t ignore tip’ above still applies.

3. Help your child become more confident, and eventually resilient to bullying.

Socialize your child: enroll him or her in outside school activities. This will help develop other talents and positive attitudes.

Encourage sticking with a friendly group of classmates and making more friends.

Make more friends outside of school: enrolling him or her in other activities will help! Doing ‘like’ things with other children interested in what they like is a great motivator to excel in those activities and confidence grows.

Always encourage your child to go to adult authority figures for help. Success, from childhood to adulthood is related to an individual willing to ask for help!

Create a loving and safe home and open your lines of communication with your child and other family members!

This says alot about both the members who make Old Town Fight Club an exclusive Mixed Martial Arts and Personal Fitness Center in the Monrovia area!

Here’s the deal – come on in and try a class on us. That’s right – Try a FREE class on us. You will fall in love with the people, the instructors, and the class!

See Article: “Top 11 New Monrovia Businesses of 2010“

Everyone at Old Town Fight Club is supportive to all of your health and fitness goals, as well as your MMA goals if you want to broaden your horizon!

Here’s what we have to offer:

If you walk into the hustle and bustle of a busy evening (around 6:00PM), you may see a group of Karate Students at the side of the ring learning traditional Okinawa-Te katas and MMA Street Fighting Techniques.

Look deeper into the gym and you’ll find either an MMA Fit class or a Fight Shape Conditioning class: [see schedule].

Over on the other side of the gym is 1500 square feet dedicated to Cia Paulista Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!

But wait, don’t leave yet because around 6:45 the Muay Thai fighters and trainers start to walk in and warm up where they can find space. Some do some mitt work in the 16 foot boxing ring, or jump rope somewhere on the mat, or they jump on a treadmill or do some lifting in the weight room.

Then comes the boxers and KoKoDo JuJutsu classes. You may see the Boxers doing ‘road work conditioning’ on Tuesday and Thursday nights – and you’ll see some wrist locks, judo throws, and self defense techniques by the KoKoDo JuJutsu students.

As the night winds down someone grabs a mop and others help out to clean the mats. This is ‘their gym’ – the members make it what it is and they also clean up after themselves for the next day.

Listen to what they laugh and talk about as the gym slowly winds itself down from a night of blood, sweat, and occasional tears.

Had enough? Well, don’t go to bed too late because on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 5:30AM you can join the Fight Shape Boot Camp class for a great start to your work day!

Then – do it all again at 5PM with a Karate class and more! [Old Town Fight Club Schedule]

And if you want, check in for a “Power Lunch” workout during mid day (by appt only).

Old Town Fight Club also offers personal training for any class available – just ask!

So there you have it – a premiere facility with top notch instructors and a ton of classes!

This is why, you guess it, Old Town Fight Club is in the Top 11 New Businesses in Monrovia for 2010!

See you at the gym.

It is:

Boxing Roadwork

On Tuesday and Thursday nights (7PM-8PM) you can join Old Town Fight Club Boxers on a nightly (if weather permits) roadwork drill. Take to the streets of Old Town Monrovia and go for a run with other Boxers.

The Boxing Roadwork we have at Old Town Fight Club does not limit itself to grounding the pavement. After the run you will put yourself through a rigirous weight training routine and conditioning session. If you are a boxer and need to get your cardio up, these boxing drills are important.

The longer you run, the longer you can fight – and if you catch yourself out of breath during a relaxed sparring session after 1 round, you are in big trouble!

Get a great pair of running shoes and join the boxing team in the new class that OTFC has to offer – Boxing Drills: Boxing Roadwork.

Here is the current boxing schedule (Subject to change so please call)!

Monday: Boxing Workout – Technique 8PM-9PM
Tuesday: Boxing Roadwork and Conditioning 7:30PM-8:30PM
Wednesday: Boxing Workout – Technique 8PM-9PM
Thursday: Boxing Roadwork and Conditioning 7:30PM-8:30PM

The first kick you learn in a karate class is the front kick. It’s also the first kick students stop using due to wanting to use kicks with more pizazz… like a flying side kick, a spinning hook, or maybe a jump on the cage wall round house. Grant it, if any of these kicks connect, they can end a fight. But why not end the fight with a front kick to the chin and go home unscathed?

Anderson Silva has, and always has, used basic Martial Arts techniques in his stand up. He manages and closes the gap with basic strikes, and throws deadly blows that end fights with precision vs all out power.

Throwing effective techniques that are done with technical precision can mean so much more in a fight than loading up with power punches, kicks, and blows. A snap punch to the jaw with a good base will end a fight. A snap front kick straight up the middle can keep a championship belt.

Anderson Silva’s precise strikes have won him fights – more than any fighter in the UFC for that matter. Which is why Anderson Silva is the UFC’s pound for pound best fighter – ever.

Lesson learned martial arts practitioner – its not about the complicated tricky techniques out there, its about the basics and the effectiveness you have with them.

Practice these simple yet effective techniques but also remember, Practice doesn’t make perfect – Perfect Practice makes Perfect!

Yes, at age 48 you still can walk into the octagon and kick someone's ass. Well, not "YOU" but maybe Herschel Walker can.

Herschel Walker can celebrate after beating Scott Carson in a Strikeforce heavyweight mixed martial arts fight in San Jose, Calif., Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011. Walker won by technical knock out in the first round.

Herschel Walker TKOs Scott Carson!

Yes, at age 48 you still can walk into the octagon and kick someone’s ass. Well, not “YOU” but maybe Herschel Walker can. Okay, I won’t take anything away from the over 40 MMAer since I am an over 40 MMAer. See, at age 43 I can make up words like MMAer. But can I walk into an octagon in a competitive environment and knock a skilled MMAer down? Probably not. For most of us this would be an unlikely scenario.

20 years ago – maybe… probably… in my case… HELL YA. But now… meh…

Anyway, Herschel Walker, you know the guy… he used to run through Middle Linebackers in the NFL and the guy Keith the Knock Out Kid Berry was smack talking about… well, last night he had his 2nd professional MMA fight. And guess what, he knocked the guy out. So much for Berry being the next in line, Berry needs to win something… anything for that matter.

Unfortunately, Walker hasn’t agreed to a 3rd fight. I’d love to see him take his athleticism in the cage as far as it possibly can go. Sure, he’s not fighting UFC type fighters, but that day may come. Just keep winning.
